Malaya gained its independence from the British on Aug 31, 1957;
subsequently, I think the North Borneo and Sarawak was given back its autonomy in 1963.
Sept 16, 1963 however was a day of even greater historical significance to the country.
This was the day that Malaysia came into being when four independent countries
Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah), and Sarawak came together
to be as a Malaysian Federation but of course, Singapore pulled out on Aug 9, 1965.
