Sultan Abdul Samad Building

The Sultan Abdul Samad Building
is located in front of the Dataran Merdeka or Merdeka Square
(Independence Square) and the Royal Selangor Club

The structure takes its name from Sultan Abdul Samad
the reigning sultan (苏丹) of Selangor (雪兰莪) at the time when construction began in
1894 and completed in 1897.

It formerly housed the superior courts (最高法院) of the country, I think the
superior courts have moved to the new Government hub
at Putrajaya (普特拉贾亚).
Currently, the building houses the offices of the
Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture of Malaysia

Old timer

Time and tide wait for no man or animal
but
We all find ourselves with "time to kill" occasionally ...

I thought about what to post on a Saturday early morning
before my wife and kids wake up ...

"well, there's another ten minutes down the drain"...
but
what could be more gratifying then communicating
my thoughts to my friends across the world
through photography in
this blog ...

Behind bars

Shadows behind bars

I have just realized
that we have always locked ourselves in our own homes behind bars
much like in a prison except that we have the keys ...

We seem to despise those who live in prison behind
bars for what they did wrong ...

Did we do anything wrong to imprison ourselves
in our own "homes" ...

The shadows did not have a choice,
The prisoners did not have a choice,
But do we have a choice ...

Parking Lot

What one was, but longer ...

I have forgotten how many times I walked passed this parking lot in the morning
to the office ...

I can dare say that I have not really noticed or looked at it
so closely ...

Until I saw it in the view finder of my camera ...

Passers-by looked at me in curiosity for why I was
photographing a parking lot where just next to it stood
the Petronas twin towers ...

I am glad I took this photograph because this morning when
I walked passed the same spot, it was demolished for the
construction of a new concrete office tower; perhaps
one that will be noticed by passers-by ...

I would suppose no one will remember it
except me and you who is now looking at it ...

Love Lane

Georgetown Penang

Love Lane as it is called is found at the inner city of Georgetown.
I think it forms the boundary of what is designated as
George Town Unesco World Heritage Site.

There were quite a few stories why it is called the Love Lane.
The most popular is that somehow adjacent to this street were used
to be wealthy Chinese man who house their mistresses ...

Another story was told about the houses build along this lane
were brothels for British sailors, solders, or businessmen in
the 19th century ...

Another saying was it was named to commemorate
a British officer named Love ...

Today, you can find a number of hostels which are favorites
for backpackers who come to Penang ...

Once, I accidentally held my breath before
I pressed the shutter for a butterfly ...

Since then I have held my breath for

Words from a dead leaf

From the faces of a dead leaf, I fear that
we will be cursed to struggle if
we continue to live with dissatisfaction ...

From the shadows of a dead leaf, I realized that
we will never live if
we are looking for the meaning of life ...

Offerings of Pure white

Milk Offerings to Lord Murugan
Thaipusam

Water Road Penang
January 20, 2011

For the Hindus, during Thaipusam
Carrying pots of milk on the
head symbolizes a smaller burden of offering
(as compared to those who carry the Cavadee)
but the journey itself with the bare foot walk to the
temple reflects the devotees inner strength to connect with God ...

Milk offering as a ritual is an ancient custom in many
parts of Asia.

In Mongolia, milk is a life resource and a
symbol of holy and sacred. The custom of milk offering is
still kept for welcoming or bidding farewell to a long trip ...

In Japan and Philippines, there are also rituals of using milk
as a cleansing and offering ...

However, I have not known of any Chinese rituals
bearing the offerings of white milk ...
