...... There are lots of these big birds at the Kuala Lumpur zoo. And they are huge wonderful birds which makes it easier to practice Fast Shutter priority to freeze their flight motion. Large birds are actually slower and therefore easier targets. Depending on the kind and tones of the bird, the suggested baseline manual settings are 1/500th to 1/1000th second for shutter speed. I was told that the baseline setting are f4.0 to f8 for aperture. The general rule seems to be if the bird is darker, then the Aperture should be bigger (small f number like f/4) to ease up on under-exposing the image. (But here as my camera was on shutter priority, it calibrated itself for an f/16). It is suggested therefore to use "M" or "Manual" mode to work within the baseline Shutter and Aperture Settings. Lots of light is the best condition so that the ISO number can be tuned to lowest possible like ISO200 or even ISO100. (In my case, it was ISO640 as I was shooting under a lot of shades). Focus lock of half-pressing the shutter is important to lock in the focus of the bird while tracking its motion using the viewfinder. I still find it needs lots of practice which makes "Photographing birds in flight" a very challenging and enjoyable photography subject.

...... I think this is really a lucky shot even when my camera setting was at Aperture priority at f/16. And for me, a rare opportunity of two dragonflies come into the viewfinder. Not the perfect camera settings, but good enough for me. Shooting dragonflies has always been a challenge for me. I have come to realize that learning their behavior and habits will benefit you in the field. Some species are very active and will seem to fly all the time, never landing and others will land and perch on stems, dead plants, tree branches, and some high up in trees, and some on the ground. Some species will allow for very close approach while others seem to be very easily spooked. As dragonflies have excellent eyesight, I find that slow movements are the best. There are many species with color varieties and can be very addictive after you have got some first few good shots of them !

...... I have always wanted to know how to shoot a bird in a cage. A while ago, I stumbled into an article exactly on how it is done and I tried it here. The trick is to get your lens as close as possible to the cage with a very large aperture (small F number); I set mine  to 3.2 (lowest for the Tamron SP90 is f/2.8). This arrangement will throw off the the cage (totally out of focus). To get an even better result, it was suggested that one should wrap around the lens with some cloth but I did not do that for this shot. It is not so easy anyway because the birds aren't going to stay around on one spot forever and when you move your lens so close to the cage to get a shot, you might just scratch your lens ! Having a cloth wrapped around the lens might be even just extra insurance for protecting it while moving the lens so near to the cage !

...... Inside the KL Zoo, there is a small safari with some enclosure from the public and the animals are at a distance. I envisioned the Rhino as the goal keeper with the ball (coconut) ready to kick it to mid field. Here, in this shot, I experimented with a 2 shot HDR. In my opinion, extreme and subtle HDR processing are both wonderful and perhaps suitable for different types of photography subjects and conditions of the image. For this HDR procssing of the Rhino, I was using just a little bit of HDR tuning.

...... The butterfly enclosure is just at the entrance of the Sanctuary which is not very large. Beyond the butterfly enclosure are the koi pond and reptile area. At 9:30am, I had no luck with any butterflies when I first got in to the butterfly enclosure. I went back to the butterfly enclosure for a second round of shooting at 10:50am. I think sometimes when you have no luck with the first round of shooting, you have to leave the place and come back for the second round shortly. Or maybe I was just not patience enough during the first round shooting the butterflies ! And perhaps a lesson in photography for me that one should not over expect great results in every photography outing; some days can be good and other days may not.

When I initially started macro photography, I was running around and chasing the butterflies; today, I would stand and observe the butterflies around me for a while before I start photographing them. And, I am very used to just be in one spot and observing butterflies around me before I work on them. I believe when you do that, with a little bit of luck, the butterflies come to you instead of you going after them !

...... It is a long walk to the end of this jetty where the fishing boats come back from sea in the morning, the boats can only park further at tide fall. Only fishermen's motobikes are parked on sides of the jetty, I believe sunset here will be very beautiful as well.

...... It was a very confusing sight for me, really much like a war zone or aftermath of a war zone perhaps. Some places here smells (the smells could have been the combination of dead fish, salted fish, and scattered rubbish which is famous in Sekinchan). It is a little pity as Sekinchan could really have been a beautiful place for tourist for the eco-tour, seafood, and padi fields. I processed the image into Sepia to present this mood. Nevertheless, the Padi fields are really beautiful, and seafood is really good.

...... Never forget the Lotus flowers when visiting Bagan Lalang. It seems that June and July is the best times, August onwards seems to have less blossoms. (I am not sure and don't know why)
