...... I have always wanted to know how to shoot a bird in a cage. A while ago, I stumbled into an article exactly on how it is done and I tried it here. The trick is to get your lens as close as possible to the cage with a very large aperture (small F number); I set mine  to 3.2 (lowest for the Tamron SP90 is f/2.8). This arrangement will throw off the the cage (totally out of focus). To get an even better result, it was suggested that one should wrap around the lens with some cloth but I did not do that for this shot. It is not so easy anyway because the birds aren't going to stay around on one spot forever and when you move your lens so close to the cage to get a shot, you might just scratch your lens ! Having a cloth wrapped around the lens might be even just extra insurance for protecting it while moving the lens so near to the cage !

...... The butterfly enclosure is just at the entrance of the Sanctuary which is not very large. Beyond the butterfly enclosure are the koi pond and reptile area. At 9:30am, I had no luck with any butterflies when I first got in to the butterfly enclosure. I went back to the butterfly enclosure for a second round of shooting at 10:50am. I think sometimes when you have no luck with the first round of shooting, you have to leave the place and come back for the second round shortly. Or maybe I was just not patience enough during the first round shooting the butterflies ! And perhaps a lesson in photography for me that one should not over expect great results in every photography outing; some days can be good and other days may not.

It's bounden duty 它的天职 ...

...... Someone once told me that "Observation is the best teacher" when it comes to Macro photography. When I initially started macro photography, I was running around and chasing the butterflies; today, I would stand and observe the butterflies around me for a while before I start photographing them. And, I am very used to just be in one spot and observing butterflies around me before I work on them. I believe when you do that, with a little bit of luck, the butterflies come to you instead of you going after them !

... the butterflies aren't coming to me this morning, but the flowers are always waiting for me ...... Here, I purposely set the white balance to Tungsten in a day light situation to see the effects; the wall behind was blue and there was only a little bit of sunlight as part of the sanctuary is enclosed with a net. A unique observation and comment I got from this flower is "Flower of death" because of the background colors rendered by the "Tungsten" White Balance Setting !

... The Sanctuary has just a small enclosure for butterflies and the rest of the park are reptiles and plants; I found these just next to the turtle pool. The subtle sunlight was just right in the morning for it some leaf photography. The Park was suddenly flooded with tourist and I think several bus loads of tourist from China. Indeed, at Melacca town itself later in the evening; I encountered bigger groups of Chinese Tourist on the Melacca historical sites.

..... Walking into the Sanctuary just after the bird cages are short trees and shrubs with some sunlight in the morning; there are lots of leaf study opportunity here just before the staircase entering the butterfly enclosure area. My daughter told me it looks like a face of a human with the eyes starring at you.
